Salerno and Civitavecchia (Rome)

Wednesday December 4th - Day 12 - Salerno

We didn't do any organized tours today as we are both pretty tired and needed a day off. But still did lots of eating of course and had a little walk round a park close to the boat, I mean ship, and ended up by the sea side - black sand - nice.

Thursday December 5th - Last Day - Civitavecchia Rome

Disembarking - end of cruise - just like that - all over rover.

Civitavecchia is a good hours drive from Rome and as we were staying at the Hilton Garden Hotel at the Airport rather than the one in the city of Rome we on our own for transfers. Ali was a bit optimistic about tackling the train system, apparently there were a lot of stairs and no lift at the station, so we opted for a cab with an English speaking gentleman organising taxis as the local taxi drivers couldn’t speak English.

Paid a heap of money to get a cab to the hotel - which the driver could not find. His outdated TomTom did not have the newly built hotel on it. The language barrier was a … barrier, but in the end with the help of my Google and me sitting next to him we got there.

Going straight to the hotel as a good move as we got to store our bags and allowed us to have a day in Rome. Got the train into the city and caught a Hop on Hop off bus to see the Colosseum .... we are first time tourists after al! We didn't do to much more hopping off though. I couldn't believe how big the Colosseum was until we actually stood beside it. Sadly there were heaps of hasslers trying to sell you stuff just like at the Eiffel tower. Vatican City was a drive by, we were just too tired.

Then home time - the flight to Taipei wasn't quite so bad this time as it was about 3 hours shorter.

Taipei wasn't quite as much fun as we stayed in a cheap hotel by the airport which was just as well as we slept. Still I’m so looking forward to being home and I know Ali is looking forward to the furry monster. Flying over Queensland was pretty scary as huge swathes of it are black with much more still on fire... it's hard to see from the pics.

Kitty was pleased to see us but gave us a hard time for about 4 hours.
